Call Me Crazy, But I Hate The Idea Of The Oreo Bagel

Gothamist- You’re reading this right. Oreo bagels, baked with cookie chunks and slathered with Oreo cream cheese, are now being sold at The Bagel Nook in Freehold, NJ. This is what it’s come to. We are all to blame. Featuring a swirl-style dough that’s clearly influenced by the now-infamous rainbow bagel trend, the Oreo Bagel includes chunks of the Nestle-trademarked sweet cooked right into its very essence. Plus, The Bagel Nook has begun slipping actual Oreo cookies inside the thing. It’s like the cookies-and-cream equivalent of a bacon-egg-and-cheese.

One quick look at me and you would think I would be all about the Oreo bagel. Complex carbs as far as the eye can see. A creative culinary concoction of corn syrup. It should be the first thing I think of when I wake up in the morning and the last thing I think about before I go to sleep.

My problem with the Oreo bagel is that it takes one of the all-time greats in the food game (Oreo creme) and it mixes it up with cream cheese. I want my Oreo creme as pure as Tim Tebow. Untouched and unadulterated. Just like the American flag, you don’t change a classic once it has been perfected. Just add more stars to the Old Glory and more creme to my Oreos. In fact, you can make a case that Mega Stuf Oreos are the greatest thing to happen since a bunch of gentlemen signed a Declaration of Independence down in Philly a few years ago.

Plus breakfast and desserts needs a separation like Church and state. If you eat that bagel in the morning, you are either going to get a wakeup call when your teeth that haven’t been to the dentist in a hot minute scream for their lives as they are bum rushed by sugar or you will be passed out at your cube, drooling from a Diabetic coma at 10 AM. The Oreo bagel is one of those foods that is better in theory then execution.

Unless The Bagel Nook wants to send me one to sample. I’d be game to review one for the #content.

*For the record I hate that Oreo calls it “creme” and not “cream”, but I gotta respect the way a legend spells it.
