Politico – Gawker Media founder Nick Denton will file for Chapter 11 personal bankruptcy protection on Monday, in order to prevent former professional wrestler Hulk Hogan from moving to seize his assets, POLITICO has learned. A.J. Daulerio, a former editor of Gawker.com, will also file for bankruptcy. Denton alluded to the imminent bankruptcy filing in two tweets on Monday morning. “Gawker Media Group’s resilient brands and people will thrive under new ownership, when the sale closes in the next few weeks,” he wrote. “On this bitter day for me, I am consoled by the fact that my colleagues will soon be freed from this tech billionaire’s vendetta.” In March 2015, a Florida jury decided in favor of Hogan, awarding him $140.1 million — $15 million against Gawker, $10 million against Denton personally, $100,000 against Daulerio personally, and $115 million against all three defendants jointly.

Lots of people have tweeted this story at me. I think they are expecting me to be popping bottles or something. I got to be honest. I respect the fuck out of Nick Denton. The guy built a blog empire. He was around when I started. He built Gawker from the ground up. I can’t take that away from him. And I don’t mind AJ Daulerio either. It’s the new breed at Deadspin and Jezebel who I despise. The people who think they are as important as Nick Denton. The minimum wage pimple faced college kids doing a job that any intern off the street could do. Yet these people act like they are Nick Denton. Like they invented Gawker. They act all high and mighty. These are the people I hate. I don’t revel in the downfall of Nick Denton. I revel in the downfall of all the idiots he employs who think just working at Deadspin somehow makes them an authority on anything in life.  That they are anything more than disposable minimum wage hacks. That they are anything more than the Nate’s of the world.
