Tom Coughlin Wants To Help Odell Beckham Stop Being "A Distraction"

NJ.com Tom Coughlin is fond of Odell Beckham Jr., but the former Giants coach did not pull any punches during a television appearance when asked about the star wideout’s latest meltdown. During an interview on CBS Sports Network’s ‘We Need To Talk,’ Coughlin agreed with now-head coach Ben McAdoo’s recent assessment that Beckham and his emotional outbursts are a distraction for Beckham, and the Giants.

“He is a good kid. He is a team guy in the team room. It’s just when he gets on the field, there’s only one way he knows how to play,” Coughlin told hosts Dana Jacobson, Andrea Kremer, Lisa Leslie and Summer Sanders. “I would love to try to help him in this regard because I think so highly of him, but for his own good (he needs to calm down) because he is a distraction. If you watch a game, the camera is on him the whole time.”

Listen I love General Coughlin. Every time I thought the Giants were going to fire him, he rallied the troops and beat the Patriots in a Super Bowl. Dude restored Giants pride and almost made unflappable Eli cry during his “resignation” press conference. Part of me died when Tom Coughlin got the axe and Jerry Reese stayed.

But Coughlin needs to stay away from the Giants at this point. His firing resignation was the Giants going with a full measure. I’m sure John Mara wasn’t unhappy to see Coughlin go full time with the NFL offices. Hell, Mara could have even asked for a favor to get Coughlin in just so he wouldn’t linger over the Giants and work for free like Milton from Office Space. And while I think a lot of this ODB stuff has been completely overblown by the haters and the media, the fact remains that he has had to grow up and stop giving them ammo to pick him apart. He is setting records for starts to a career but this is all the bullshit we are talking about. Coughlin had his chance to “help” Odell last year and he watched ODB almost decapitate Josh Norman on the field. Don’t get me wrong, Coughlin turning beet red as he screams at Odell for a 15-yard penalty is downright hilarious in a “I hope my team isn’t imploding” kind of way. Odell just needs to ball out like he almost always does and let the NFL fairly officiate all the dickheads taking cheap shots at ODB. Which should help after today’s news.

Oh yeah and I’d appreciate it if Dez Bryant can keep his tweets as far away from my team as possible. I don’t know what was on that Wal-Mart tape, but if it’s as bad as Schefty says it is, I don’t need him supporting Odell.
