Jordan Spieth Complains About Poorly Raked Bunker, Turns Out It Was 2 Of His College Teammates

THE PLAYERS Championship - Round 1

Golf ChannelJordan Spieth walked up to his ball in a greenside bunker on the first hole at TPC Sawgrass and was so surprised by the lie he found that he whipped out his phone to document it.

Spieth’s approach to No. 1, his 10th hole of The Players Championship, hit a slope in front of the green and rolled back into the bunker, leaving him with a difficult lie. He blasted out to 45 feet and three-putted for a double bogey, a significant hiccup during a round of 1-over 73…

“Yeah, it was just a bunker that was raked to where it just kind of looked like somebody didn’t really care much to do it or were rushing off the green, because I had, I was, I think, in worse than a plugged lie, when it just trickled into it… And I overreacted probably a bit, but all in all, you just don’t see that very often and I know my guy, Michael, rakes and makes sure that that’s exactly the way that it was when he went in there, so that if you hit it in the bunker, everybody gets the same kind of thing.”

Spieth is obviously an emotional guy. He’s a bit of a lightning rod out there. That’s not a bad thing — the dude’s only 23-years-old and we like golfers that aren’t straight drips. He makes it interesting. He sometimes screams at his ball, tosses some clubs, and gets hot with the media. Or gets hot with bunker lies, so much so that he whips out his phone and snaps some pics.

Then tells the media about it. Only problem? A quick shot link investigation shows that the most likely shitty-bunker-raking culprit (when you factor in timing and location) was Cody Gribble/his caddie.

Both Gribble and his caddie, Bobby Hudson, were college golf teammates with Spieth at Texas. Awkward.

Tough break there for Jordan. When you make this a big thing, you really want the raker to be an Ian Poulter. Or a Bubba Watson. Or a Billy Horschel. Not your boys from college. Tough break.

PS — On a more positive note, and to keep you here and get those Riggsy engagement minutes up, Spieth also did this.
