Colin Trevorrow Will No Longer Direct Star Wars Episode IX

TheWrap- Colin Trevorrow is stepping down as the director of “Star Wars: Episode IX,” Disney announced on Tuesday.

“Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on ‘Star Wars: Episode IX,’” Disney said in a statement. “Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.”

Trevorrow was announced to direct the film in 2015. “Star Wars: Episode IX” is set for release in 2019 and will conclude the third trilogy of “Star Wars” movies that began with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” last year. Rian Johnson is directing “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

Listen, I know as well as anybody that when a Star Wars movie starts to fall apart behind the scenes, you panic. It’s the natural, understood, and accepted reaction. Every time the words “Han Solo Spinoff” are muttered I get reminded that they’re making that and I shit a little bit. Just a tad. This is not a time for panic, however. I’ve been worried about Colin Trevorrow directing a Star Wars movie since the moment it was announced.

When JJ Abrams was announced as the writer/director of Episode VII, I threw on Yub Nub and celebrated for months on end. I fucking love JJ Abrams. Did I have a little doubt? A little worry? Of course. Just out of love, though. I wanted the sequel trilogy to be good, and for that to happen, it has to be kicked off with a bang! The target JJ had to hit to satisfy everyone was about the size of a womp rat. Advance story, introduce story, inctroduce new characters, bring back old characters, kill off characters (spoilers), etc.

When Rian Johnson was announced as the writer/director of Episode VIII, I thought, “Woah! This one’s gonna get weird! Awesome!” I don’t have an ounce of doubt in VIII (especially knowing how likable and awesome the new characters are) and put full faith in Rian to deliver us a phenomenal film. I even told him so!

With Trevorrow directing IX though, my heart dropped a bit. I LOVE Jurassic World, I think it’s a great dumb Summer popcorn flick, but is that what I want from the Wars? Nuh uh. Not at all. How could you put so much faith in the guy after just that one movie?! You’re just gonna give him the keys to the biggest franchise in history?! What if before he got to direct Episode IX, he did another movie, and it sucke-oh wait. What’s this?

Maybe this guy isn’t so good at directing motion pictures!

Unload a few freighters of cash at Rian Johnson’s house right this instant, Disney. I haven’t even seen The Last Jedi and I know I want the epic conclusion to this trilogy in his hands. If he doesn’t want it, I’ll welcome JJ back with open arms. If JJ doesn’t want it, just pay him until he does. Seriously, give him one billion dollars. With a B.
