The War on Halloween Continues: Moana Costumes are 'Cultural Appropriation'

Moana
NY PostThe scariest thing this Halloween for New York moms isn’t zombies or ghouls — it’s politically incorrect costumes.

An article on raceconscious.org by Sachi Feris has been making the rounds on mommy Facebook groups. Feris writes that her 5-year-old daughter declared she wanted to be Polynesian Disney character Moana, which she worried would be “cultural appropriation.”

Her daughter’s other choice: Scandinavian Queen Elsa from the Disney movie “Frozen.”

“I had some reservations regarding both costume choices … about cultural appropriation and the power/privilege carried by Whiteness, and about Whiteness and standards of beauty,” she wrote. …

In the end, Feris’s daughter decided to dress as Elsa — though Feris was concerned it might teach her short-haired brunette daughter that one must be white, blue-eyed and have long flaxen hair to be a “beautiful” princess.

But she nixed the Moana costume for Mickey Mouse, because, as Ferris wrote, “we don’t have to worry about making fun of anyone or dressing up as a culture different from our own because Mickey Mouse is a pretend mouse!”

I suppose on some level I should be glad about this. Any time the nagging fascists manning personing the watchtowers of their Social Justice War fortress turn their attention inward, it’s a chance for the rest of the world to sneak by on the way to having a good time without having to explain ourselves to them. The battles in the War on Halloween usually consist of Liberal Arts majors who march to support women’s empowerment belittling their sisters for wearing sexy costumes. But as long as they’re tied up making this fun, harmless kids’ holiday miserable for their own offspring, they won’t have time to wag their judgmental, pumpkin latte-stained fingers at all the Harley Quinns, Laura Crofts and Khaleesis.

But then again, there are innocent victims here who can’t stick up for themselves, so it’s up to the rest of us. Holy moly, what the hell is wrong with these people? Is any one of them remotely capable of explaining the rules to me? What if an Asian girl wants to dress like Elsa. Is that OK? Or if a white boy wanted to go as Moana, would that work because he’s just being himself? Sincerely, I’m trying to establish where they line is drawn. And all I’ve got is that if your daughter dresses in the clothes of a non-white cartoon character, it’s “making fun of” them. If she dresses like a white cartoon character, she’s declaring that is her “standard of beauty.” But an anthropomorphic rodent with four digits on his hands that was drawn by an anti-Semite amusement park baron, that’s right in that nice, inoffensive sweet spot. Got it.

That’s right, Sachi Feris. Your little pride and joy bears the Mark of Shame that is being born Caucasian. It’s the curse you passed on to her. But she loves the spunkiness and never-give-up attitude of her Disney princess heroine Moana, and wants to pretend to be her for one of the funnest nights on the kid calendar. Which, the last I checked, is the whole fucking point of Halloween. When I went as Batman or a Patriots player as a kid, my mom wasn’t running to Google to see if I was appropriating the culture of billionaire vigilante orphans or being insensitive to the worst franchise in sports. I was just a child, being happy wearing a costume.

But let’s call this what it is. Whoever the mom of this poor, unlucky little girl is, she knows right goddamned well there is nothing offensive about a kid dressing as a non-white Disney princess. Nobody of any Polynesian descent is going to be the least little bit put out about it. Anymore than they are when some guy shows up at a pool party in an Aloha shirt. If every little girl in America went as Moana, no Hawaiians would be affected, good or bad. It will have zero impact on their lives.

But this isn’t about cultural sensitivity and it never is. Because the answer my question about the rules is that there is just one rule: Everything is wrong. SJWing is a full time, 24/7 job where no one is ever right except the scolding, disapproving thugs in the Nagtocracy. And no amount of bending to their will is ever going to make them stop. Because it’s not about eliminating racism or cultural appropriation. It’s about appearances. It’s saying “Look at me. I’m more concerned than you and feel way worse about my shimmering, translucent whiteness than anybody else so that makes me a better person.” And if their innocent child suffers for the crime of simply wanting to play Disney princess for one day, well she’s just collateral damage. What a world we’re making.
