Coconut Crab Murders Bird In Cold Blood
Let’s say you are sailing from Madagascar to Sri Lanka. A little weekend jaunt with the family. Quick stop at Mauritius and then on to the open water. Everything is going fine and you’re popping off open water Instagrams like you’re sponsored by FitTea and relaxing with a little champagne. A small dot appears on the horizon, you get closer and it starts to look more and more like an island. After checking with everyone you decide to make a quick detour to check it out. Night falls and reduced visibility coincides with disaster. The boat hits a shallow reef and everything goes haywire! Everyone is thrown around like an explosion and you go unconscious.
You wash ahore and wake up hazily on an archipelago commonly known as the Chagos Islands. SHIT. This is really the middle of nowhere. You create a makeshift shelter out of scrap metal from MH370 and try to get some rest. Out of nowhere you hear a noise. A struggle is ensuing. Wings are flapping and blood is flying everywhere. You roll out from under the aileron and see something you never imagined in your life.
Its a Coconut Crab and its eating a bird alive.

“A coconut crab has been filmed methodically stalking, killing and eating a seabird in behaviour that has shocked scientists in a calculated attack that has been described as ‘gruesome.’
The deadly crab climbed a tree and crept up on a sleeping sea bird in its nest on the remote Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean.
It then plunged its powerful claw, which has the strength of a lion’s jaw, into the bird, breaking it’s wing and sending it crashing from the tree to the sand below. The killer crustacean followed the injured, struggling bird and broke its other wing as the bird lunged about desperately and squawked in terror.”
We got crabs STALKING shit?! What planet is this. Maybe it was just a rogue Crab right? This was a random happening… right?
“Once the bird was lying helpless on the ground, five other coconut crabs arrived and tore the bird apart”
Great Odin’s Raven! Assassin crabs followed by crab mobs ripping birds apart limb by limb! An American researcher, Mark Laidre from New Hampshire, filmed the encounter and is now conducting studies to confirm that this is indeed the world we live in. A world where Coconut Crabs dominate the ecosystem and hunt back-boned animals like monsters out of a movie. I think I speak for most citizens when I say it’s a good thing this island is ten million miles from the United States. These crabs are not your average menu item at Red Lobster but rather predators able to pinch with the pressure of a Lion’s jaw!
“A researcher in Japan proved last year that the the coconut crab can pinch with a force of up to 3300 newtons, stronger than any other crustacean and comparable to a big predator’s bite, like a lion’s.
Shin-ichiro Oka at the Okinawa Churashima Foundation Research Center in Japan said: ‘The claws of coconut crabs can generate a force 80 to 100 times the mass of their body”
Watch your fingers folks!
PS: Believe it or not Japanese people eat these things
