Independent- Scientists have discovered a dinosaur-era shark with 300 teeth and a snake’s head off the Portuguese coast. The frilled shark was caught by a trawler during a research project on how to minimise unwanted catches during commercial fishing, according to Sic Noticias TV. The rare species dates back 80 million years. While its peers, such as the Tyrannosaurus rex and triceratops, died out long ago, this shark, with its frilled teeth and long, slim body still swims at great depths of at least 700 metres (2,300 feet). Professor Margarida Castro of the University of the Algarve told Sic Noticias that the shark has 300 teeth, “which allows it to trap squid, fish and other sharks in sudden lunges”. According to the Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere, the captured shark measured 1.5 m in length and was swimming off the Algarve coast.

Fuck. That. It’s actually been awhile since we’ve had one of these. There was a time when it seemed like we’d have a nightmare-inducing creature pulled out of a body of water every other day. Part of me is glad this happened. I’m glad it happened so it can serve as a reminder that bodies of water are still the scariest places in the world. It’s not even remotely close. Never forget that we know about 2% of the species that live beneath the surface. #TeamLand got too complacent during the run without terrifying creatures coming to shore. Well that all got thrown out the wind with the discovery of this fucking shark.

How scary is this latest sea monster? Well it’s from the dinosaur era. Which means it survived when all of the other dinosaurs got murked. That’s scary enough in its own right. How did it survive? Likely by using those millions of teeth in its mouth to murder and eat any living thing it came across. I respect its ability to stay alive while T-Rexs were dropping like flies but it is also a cause for concern. Anything that survives a mass extinction can’t be trusted. That sepcies probably sold out some of its best pals just to survive. I hope that one they caught off is the last of its species. We’d all be better off.
