OmegaUnderground- It’s been very quiet on the Star Wars anthology front after the recent director switch and massive reshoots on Solo: A Star Wars Story. However, it doesn’t look like Rian Johnson‘s brand new Star Wars trilogy means the end of anthologies as some might have assumed.

THR previously reported over the summer that Lucasfilm was eyeing three-time Oscar-nominated director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Reader, The Hours, The Crown) to tackle an Obi-Wan Kenobi film which everyone expects would see Ewan McGregor reprise the role.

Omega Underground has an update of sorts as a production source has revealed the studio is expecting this Kenobi film to begin filming at Pinewood Studios UK (confirmed stage location) sometime in January 2019.

Everything’s comin’ up Bob recently! I’ve written about a potential Obi-Wan spinoff movie since Disney bought Lucasfilm, long before I started working here, and now it’s looking like it’ll become a reality. It was the first thing that came to mind when they talked about potentially making these “anthology” films, because Ewan McGregor NAILED that role, but had to suffer through dreadful dialogue while doing it. Imagining him transitioning into that old Ben role with a good script has taken up a lot of real estate in my mind over the past few years.

I discussed it with my brother, and it’ll be very interesting to see how it’s handled, because Kenobi was just laying low for all of those years. Who knows if he ever got into some shit. This may just be a psychological thriller, maybe a love story (especially if Rey winds up being a Kenobi?), who knows. All I do know is that I’m excited to see Ewan McGregor step back into that role.
