Erin Hamlin, the USA Flag Bearer, Was Chosen Via Coin Toss and the Dude Who Lost, Shani Davis, Was Not Happy
The person who holds the flag during the opening ceremony at the olympics is a big deal obviously. You’re leading your entire country, the best country in the world, on the biggest stage of the world just as we’re about to dominate the life out of everyone else. The fact that the flag bearer was chosen from a coin toss is laugh out loud funny. Apparently they have a vote among eight members of the Olympic federation and that vote resulted in a four-four tie. The immediate tiebreaker is a coin flip and Erin Hamlin, an American luger, won. I feel like there’s an easy fix to preventing such an important decision coming down to a coin toss…maybe have an odd number of voters thus eliminating a tie? Too easy I guess.
Now I’ll say that a coin flip should probably not be determining who carries our flag at the olympics, but it is what it is. Shani Davis comes off here as a big time sore loser. Just be happy for Erin Hamlin publicly and voice your frustration privately. We’re all on one team dude, USA. Dominate the fuck out of everyone else and keep your composure.
P.S. If you go around saying “2-peat” you shouldn’t be allowed to carry our flag. No one says “2-peat”. It’s back to back Shani.
Update: Shani Davis turned his Twitter to private and skipped the opening ceremonies. What a guy
