“When I grabbed the clothes is when I saw the rat. I have never screamed and cried so much in my life. I ran inside and began scrubbing my hands and arms. I had touched the things in this bag because American Airlines told me to just wash everything,” Cannon told the outlet.

Cannon called the airline and was told her claim would be rushed in two to three days. Cannon then contacted the U.S. Department of Health. A health inspector reportedly told Cannon, “The biggest concern would be the plague.”

She was eventually given $1,600 for her troubles, which is the maximum international payout. “My bag and its belongings totaled $3,217. To me that’s crazy that international has a payout that is about half as much as domestic,” Cannon told the outlet.

First of all, just an all time quote by this lady to start talking about the plague. The fucking plague? What are you some serf in the feudal system*. When was the last time the plague existed? Not like 5 people caught the plague in a foreign country or some lady in Maine ate mosquitos every day for breakfast lunch and dinner and now has the plague. I’m talking full blowm plague. Next you’re going to tell me that if American Airlines loses your luggage it could trigger a polio outbreak. Grow up lady, we all have your back, no need to start talking about your New Balance shoes getting the plague because a rat died inside of them.

Now to the point of this blog. 1,600 dollars seems really cheap right? It’s so cheap I’m reassessing my desire to find a dead rat in a meal. Everything I thought I knew about payout money feels like a lie. I thought when something like this happens to you it’s basically retirement time. Take a bite of your sandwich and find a cockroach in there, you now own the restaurant. Get hit by a car, that’s a cool milly no questions asked. Have an airline give you the plague, fly for free for the rest of your life. But $1,600 is what you get when you’re bumped in peak vacation season. That’s fucking nothing. So the question is, what’s the appropriate amount for something like this? My number is 100k. You have a dead rat in my bag I want 10 dimes, cash. End of negotiation. I await your response American Airlines, I’ve found rats in every piece of luggage I’ve ever owned, I just never said anything because I refuse to complain to airlines on twitter.

*Yeah I dropped a feudal system reference, don’t make a big deal out of it.
