Meet Martin McCaulay, The Man FIGHTING for the R-Words' Name Change

Today, Hard Factor is joined by Actuary, Author, and Trade Mark Squatterr, Martin McCaulay, the man who purchased and trademarked the naming rights for the various options for the Washington name change.  Martin is an actuary in Alexandria, VA, and has little to no interest in football as is.  He isn't some die-hard Skins fan looking to make a quick buck, in fact, he claims to not be doing this at all for himself.  Martin began his fight for change about 6 years ago when speculation first arose that the name may change.  Martin successfully trademarked the Washington Pigskins at that time, and knowing a little something about the laws of maintaining a trademark, he purchased 100 mugs with the Washington Pigskin name and listed them for sale online.  

His initial application caught the attention of the NFL immediately, and rather than hitting Martin with a Barstool trademarked 'Cease & Desist', NFL trademark attorneys permitted Martin to continue using the Pigskins name.  Martin saw that as a thoughtful gesture, and in turn, he is offering any of the 4 trademarked names he has the rights to now to the NFL FOR FREE.  That's right...FREE.

And his reasoning may shock you...

Martin owns the rights to a bunch of names, but only four of those have made their way to the odds board and are rumored to be in consideration: The Redtails, Redhawks, Renegades, and Americans.  While it may not be likely that any of his names are selected, the NFL has cited trademark issues as the reason for the delayed release of the new name.  That is likely NOT the fault of Martin, who has offered the naming rights to the NFL for free, but rather, potentially the Arkansas St. Red Wolves.  Arkansas State has sued other programs in the past for use of the Red Wolves name and successfully barred a team in Chattanooga, TN, from using it.  

Martin wrote the NFL on July 4th of this year, listing all of his trademarks and offering them to the League at no cost.  He has yet to hear back.
