Is The Little Mermaid A Racist Fish? Protestors In Denmark Say Yes
First of all, Ariel...sup
Arguably the hottest Disney Princess of them all.
That is until you find out that she might be...RACIST. I haven't seen this movie in a long time, probably since like 1996, but I googled why people might think this statue/smoking hot redhead might be racist and this is what I found
The Little Mermaid has not been part of this debate, but last year a Disney live-action remake of the 1989 animated film of the same name was the subject of controversy after African American actress Halle Bailey was cast in the central role.
“I am having a hard time seeing what is particularly racist in the fairy tale ‘The Little Mermaid,’” Ane Grum-Schwensen, a researcher at the H.C. Andersen Center at University of Southern Denmark, told local news wire Ritzau.
Something about Halle Bailey, a black actress and vocalist being cast a fictional character from a Danish fable / Disney movie, and some (moronic/racist) people were mad that the live action casting wasn't based on the real person...which is a cartoon. Or something. You might even venture to say that, now, there is NOTHING even remotely racist about the Little Mermaid.
Having said that...I am kind of surprised that The Little Mermaid hasn't been canceled. I don't want to do tell Feminists how to do their job, but they could've had the Little Mermaid in their crosshairs a long time ago. Maybe they're just working on spreadsheet of things to be agree about and they haven't gotten to the 1989 classic yet. This chick, our protagonist, decided abandon her entire family and give up her voice to get with some fuck boi named Eric who likes her better once she can't talk. The message to young girls, shut up and look pretty. I am not saying that, per se, but I could see how activists who fucking LOVE to cancel things would be banging the drum to cancel Ariel and the men who wrote it.
The soundtrack of Little Mermaid is fucking FIRE. Elite Disney soundtrack. With jams like "under the sea" and "Part Of Your World". Also "Kiss The Girl". Great island vibes from that song. Also...some rape/assault vibes
The following lyrics
There you see her
Sitting there across the way
She don't got a lot to say
But there's something about her
And you don't know why
But you're dying to try
You wanna kiss girl
Hmhhh, yep. Relatable.
Yes, you want her
Look at her, you know you do
It's possible she wants you too
There's one way to ask her
It don't take a word, not a single word
Go on and kiss the girl (kiss the girl)
While, in the wild and practically there may be some uncomfortable truths to this last lyric there are literally probably dozens of other ways to ask her. Again, not saying I want it canceled. I think the song and the movie are great. Just kind of surprised that this is available on Disney+ right now without any trigger warnings about sexual assault and like cultural oppression or something. In the never ending race to cancel things, I am surprised that the Feminists got beat to this one.
