Seeing Mongo Get His Hall Of Fame Jacket And Bust Will Break Your Heart

Man, fuck this disease. Seeing people struggle with ALS absolutely shatters the heart. Mongo is obviously before my time and the time of many of the readers, but we all still know the lore about him because of our dads, uncles, and NFL Films.

I met him once in either 2009 or 2010 at a Buffalo Wild Wings near Hoffman Estates. It wasn't an event or anything. He was just hanging out with some friends watching the Bulls playoff series. He was exactly what you'd want. Kind, gregarious, his handshake engulfed yours as if you were a toddler and his back slap could put you on the floor.

The personality, the hair, the intensity, the heartbeat of all time team and the greatest defense in NFL history. The type of guy who seems like he could've just as easily been in the WWE. Seeing a disease steal all of that from him should make appreciate your parents and your own health because it can go at any time with a little bit of bad luck.

All the best to him, his family, and his obvious vast network of friends and teammates that love him. An honor long overdue and not a minute too soon.
