“We’re Tough, We’re Physical, We’re Fucking Coming!" - It's Safe To Say Portland State's Coach Jase Coburn Is Fired Up

I don't expect the world to be dialed into The Big Sky conference finales on a Monday night in March, and I'll be honest even I wasn't watching this one. But I saw this clip and just loved everything about it. Portland St is no powerhouse, they finished over .500 just once in Jase Coburn's tenure at the helm, but this year he's got things rolling (well rolling for them anyway).

The Vikings are 19-12 overall and 11-7 in the Big Sky good enough to earn the 3 seed in the tournament. It's worth noting in the 4 games vs the top two seeds in the tournament (N.Colorado and Montana) the Vikings split with a 2-2 record. Seems like they could be a live dog in the tourney if that's your sort of thing.

Anyway, this isn't so much about the isolated success of Portland State, it's more about how awesome this time of year is and what kind of emotions can be pulled from Senior Day. It's just different type of feel, especially at these smaller schools where you grind it out over 30 games, some of which are buy games at bigger schools where you know you will get your ass kicked, most of which are on a streaming service that no one is watching except lunatics like me who don't sleep. You grind and grind for this time of year where for one week of the year everyone is looking to watch your conference play for the 1 bid it will get.

These smaller conferences, this is what they live for. And no matter how small the school is, or how irrelevant the team may be. On senior day you get to shine, and you get to be proud that you played on the division 1 level, and look back at all you worked for, and everything you did to get to that level. And coaches look back at the kids they started with and the men they turned them into. It's just an awesome night across the sport, and Jase Coburn being fired up about his team potentially going dancing is fucking awesome. I'll be rooting for the Vikings to take this one down.
