Heisman Trophy Winner And NFL Great, Eddie George, Is The New Head Football Coach At Bowling Green
I didn't see this coming (until the reports started circulating this weekend that he was a finalist), but I'd consider this news to be pretty notable, no? It was one thing when Eddie George, the 1995 Heisman Trophy winner who went on to have his #27 not only retired by the Buckeyes but also by the Tennessee Titans, took over at Tennessee State in 2021. It was his first coaching job and obviously there are going to be critics saying that former players shouldn't just catapult their way into head coaching positions. But he stuck with Tennessee State for 4 years, going 24-22 overall but finishing with a 9-4 record this past year and a spot in the playoffs. Apparently that moved him up the ranks enough to where he interviewed for the Chicago Bears job (looked like a box check for the Rooney Rule) but eventually to the Bowling Green job as of this morning. Ummm, Bowling Green ain't no slouch job? Scott Loeffler just left it to go to the Eagles. Dino Babers used it to go to Syracuse in the past decade. And uhh, another famous Ohio State guy got his first crack at Bowling Green too....
I'm clearly biased but I absolutely love this move for both Eddie and Bowling Green. Eddie gets to move up the ladder to a school where if he succeeds, he can move into a Power 4 position. Bowling Green gets a guy that can walk into any school in the great state of Ohio and his name will not just carry weight, it will carry immense popularity and aura with both the player AND the coach. I expect BG to improve in recruiting immediately....
And it took one Google search for me to find out that Yes, we're 2 seasons away from seeing Eddie return to Columbus again.
I'm officially cheering for Eddie and I'm cheering for BG in every game they play except September 4th, 2027.
