Kevin Willard Admits He Has No Idea What He's Doing, Says He Wouldn't Change A Thing About This Last Week After Losing To Florida
And there we go. How soon after he left the podium did he sign on the dotted line with Villanova? He claimed he has no idea what he's doing (presumably talking about his future of where coaching, not the idea of coaching in general), but I think the writing is on the wall. He once again brought up that Maryland has no AD right now, and he said "I love College Park but I have to take everything into consideration." before saying he wouldn't change a single thing about how he's handled the last week. Aka, he gone. He blasted the University, leveraged this job into a new job, and now will move to Philadelphia.
The humor in this entire debacle is Willard is not a once in a generation coach. It's the way he trashed the university, lied, and leveraged one good season into a new job while speaking out his ass about loyalty and community. He was a snake and a dick when he didn't have to be. The last couple of weeks should have been about the Crab 5 and this awesome group of players, and instead it was about Kevin Willard. The entire situation sucks, but he said he wouldn't change a thing. Awesome.
So now JuJu is graduating, Queen goes to the NBA, and everyone else goes with Willard to Nova. This basketball program needs a new coach and an entire new roster. It sucks. Willard is leaving an burning the entire program down behind him. I get it's "the way it is these days", but man, this one is special.
Not for nothing, it was an awesome year and it was great to see Maryland hoops back in the national spotlight, just like they were my entire childhood during the Gary Williams years. I really wanted Willard to get us back to those days, but he didn't give a fuck. None at all. It's very unfortunate, but hopefully whoever they hire will be The Guy and build this program back up to where it belongs. Go Terps.
